Future Factory

Participation in the Hannover Messe allowed us to investigate in details the emerging technological trends of the industry and the main vectors of its development. It could be perceived that the whole sphere of production is gradually but rapidly drifting from its accustomed methods and arrangements towards digitalization and automatization of processes and operations. The one particular sector that captured my attention was Logistics and Warehousing - tremendous alterations and developments have occured in this sector, comparing to the past decades and preceding technologies applied. Robots and automated machines have been widely utilized in the sphere of Logistics and Warehousing, and year by year their efficiency increases significantly, they require less human involvement and are capable of performing more complex operations, such as precise and accurate sorting and allocation of goods. Considering the concept of the Future Factory in terms of Supply Chain and Warehousing arrangements, we might predict even more perceptible and dramatic shift towards automatization and development of robotics in Logistics. Not only do the companies intend to utilize more robotics, but they also strive to establish the consistent and efficient Supply Chain that would connect separate automated links and work as the powerful, intelligent organism, capable of performing any type of required activities and operations, regardless of their complexity and scale.  It is rather challenging to foretell if the human involvement in the Supply Chain of the Future Factory is going to vanish completely or whether it is just going to decrease dramatically but still remain as one of the key elements of the whole chain. Though Hannover Messe allowed us to witness the development of the industry and its emerging tendencies, we can hardly define its final point and results.

Trip to Germany 2017

Last Friday I returned back home to Finland from the interesting and memorable trip to Germany, that had been organized by HAMK University of Applied Sciences. I would love to express my sincere gratitute to the university and particularly to the staff members, who accompanied us, young travellers, and who arranged the whole journey.

Before the trip even started, I had already had positive expectations about it, since I somehow realized that there are definitely many things to do, to see and to experience in Germany in a free time and, in addition to this, the program of the trip seemed to be extensive and suitable for people of our occupation, Mechanical Engineering students. All my expectations were met fully, and I truly enjoyed the time spent in Germany and all the activities that I was engaged in. What I liked about the trip was a reasonable balance between the time allocated to company tours/events and the time given to the students' free activities. All the trip took place mainly in two towns - Bremen and Hannover, and I, for example, had sufficient number of hours between the major events to wander around and to capture the local sights of both towns. Below, for example, there are two spectacular pieces of architecture, which I found while being in Hannover.

I should also mention, how wonderful it was to escape from finnish prices and to reside for some time in a country, where you can get a nice large kebab for 3.50 euro. The chance to taste the local food and beverages for affordable and reasonable costs was a tremendous advantage of the whole trip and a great experience in general - being in the downtown of Bremen and enjoying some delicious huge burger in a local cafe was a truly athmospheric thing.

Mentioning the free time activities, I must not, however, forget about the main events of the trip. In total, there were three of them - company visits to the Mercedez factory and to the Airbus Defence center and the two-day trip to the Europe's largest technical fair - Hannover Messe.
Among all these events, the most enjoyable for me was the Hannover Messe, mainly due to its inexpressible immensity and the tremendous number of innovations, companies, ideas and concepts presented. Considering my previous experiences of participating in the exhibitions of this kind, I might for sure say that the visit to Hannover Messe was the most interesting, exciting and useful in terms of gaining new information and getting familiar with the sphere of technology. I even managed to find the companies that presented the software I am personally working with, and to aks direct questions.

Concluding my short narration about the trip that I had, I would again love to say that it was a truly authentic and unique experience, and I would definitely be interested in participating in more trips of this kind. Thanks again to all the organizers, people in charge and the staff, who were accompanying us throughout the journey.

Saksan reissu 2017

Reissuun lähdettiin 23.4.2017 aamulla klo 8.30. Suomessa keli oli tuttuun tapaan surkea. Lento lähti Helsinki-Vantaan kentältä ja laskeutui Hampuriin 10.00 aamulla. Saksassa keli oli synkkä, lämpöä noin 10 astetta, mutta ei sentään satanut lunta.

                                                                                                        

Lentokentältä menimme metrolla Hampurin päärautatieasemalle. Söimme KFC:ssä jonka jälkeen jatkoimme matkaa Bremeniin junalla.





Bremenissä nukuimme ensimmäisen yön Best Western hotellissa. Hintaa oli 100€, ja siihen sisältyi aamupala. Eli 25€ lärvi. Hotellihuone oli todella hyvä ja laadukas hintaansa nähden.




Maanantaina 25.4 luovutimme hotellihuoneen ja lähdimme kohti Townside Hostellia jossa kaikki muut Hamkkilaiset jo olivatkin. Saimme 4 hengen huoneen muutaman tunnin odottamisen jälkeen. Odotellessa maistui olut.

Maanantaina kävimme myös mersun terhdaskierroksella Bremenissä. Kierros oli ihan hieno mutta melko suppea. Ainut mitä pääsi katsomaan oli kokoonpanolinja, joka toimi kyllä hienosti.

Illalla maistelimme sivistyneesti halpaa viiniä ja olutta, hyvällä lopputuloksella. 

Tiistai aamuna menimme vierailulle Airbus space and defence center:iin Bremenissä. Vierailulla ei saanut kuvata joten todistusaineistoa ei löydy. Kierros oli todella mielenkiintoinen vaikka ei siellä juurikaan mitään nähnykään. Paikanpäälle oli rakennettu esittelyrata joka kierroksella kierrettiin, ja siellä näytettiin kaikki mitä voitiin. Jano oli reissulla kova ja hostellille oli kiva päästä takaisin. 

Keskiviikko ja torstai 26.4-.27.4 kävimme Hannoverin teknologia messuilla. Lääniä oli tuhottomasti ja tuntui että kahdessa päivässä ei saanut kierrettyä lähellekkään koko messualuetta. Väkeä oli ihan tarpeeksi ja hyvät kengät oli aika tärkeä juttu. Yläpuolella kuva hallista 13 joka oli pienimmästä päästä. Yhteensä halleja taisi olla 27 kpl.

Messuilla oli kaikkea jännää. Esim metallista tulostettu Bentleyn vanne ja tulostetut ukkelit. 

Pitkän messupäivän aikana on hyvä muistaa oikeanlainen nesteytys.

Perjantaina 28.4 luovutimme huoneen hostellista ja lähdimme taas kohti Hampuria. Matkalla hörpimme kahvit samalla kun odotimme junan saapumista. 

Junamatka Hampuriin kesti vähän yli tunnin. Perillä lähdimme etsimään hostellia josta olimme varanneet huoneen viimeistä yötä varten.

Hostellissa jouduimme odottamaan huoneen vapautumista noin 3 tuntia, jonka takia hostelli tarjosi vaivanpalkaksi ilmaisia drinkki lippuja. Kun viimein saimme huoneen, jätimme tavarat sinne ja lähdimme kaupungille syömään ja tutkimaan paikallista kulttuuria. 

Hampurissa keli oli sateinen ja miehet väsyneitä. 

Lauantaina lähdimme hostellilta yhden aikaan. Menimme kaupungille taas syömään ja siitä aloimme suunnistamisen kohti Hampurin lentokenttää. 

Yhteenvetona Saksa on mukava maa. Olut on halpaa ja sitä saa ympäri vuorokauden. Ihmiset olivat pääsääntöisesti mukavia. 

Kotiin on aina kiva kuitenkin palata.

Paluu tulevaisuuteen

Olen kotoisin Anjalankoskelta, nykyisen Kouvolan alueelta. Täällä Kymijoen varrella paperiteollisuus on ollut merkittävässä roolissa kautta aikojen. Perinteinen savupiipputeollisuus on ollut kantava voima rautatieosaamisen lisäksi.

Yllä olevassa kuvassa näkyy Myllykosken paperitehdas. Sen juuret ovat syntyneet jo 1800-luvun lopulla. Vuonna 2011 tehdas myytiin isommalle osakeyhtiölle ja lopputulos oli selvä - tehdas sai sulkemispäätöksen. Se oli iso isku Myllykosken kokoiselle paikalle ja lähialueille. Monien ystävieni vanhemmilta meni työpaikka alta. Monet heistä olivat työskennelleet koko uransa tässä tehtaassa.

Nyt kun muutama vuosi on kulunut, osa entisistä tehdaslaisista on löytänyt uuden työn ja on myös  väläytelty uusia käyttötarkoituksia tehtaalle, Bioetanolihanke on ollut lehtien otsikoissa, mutta aika näyttää toteutuuko se.  Kaikkea toivoa ei ole silti menetetty.

Saksan matkallamme teimme erilaisia vierailuja. Mieleenpainuvin oli Mercedes- Benzin tehdas Bremenissä. Se kuvasti hyvin, kuinka moderni tulevaisuuden tehdas voikaan olla. Auton alustan osat olivat valmiiksi kasatut ja kori kiinnitettiin päälle. Työvaiheita oli paljon erilaisia ja työntekijät saivat puolen tunnin välein vaihtaa työpistettä, jotta työ ei kävisi yksitoikkoiseksi. Työvaiheiden järjestys oli myös tarkkaan mietitty. Ei voinut muuta kuin ihailla tehtaan linjaston suunnittelijoita.

Tehtaalla oli kuitenkin myös varjopuolensa: ihmiset työskentelivät liukuhihnalla ja aikataulussa pysymistä seurattiin jatkuvasti. Jos yhdessä työvaiheessa tuli ongelma, liukuhihna jouduttiin pysäyttämään. Uudella työntekijällä on varmasti kovat paineet onnistua. Myös robotit hoitivat oman osuutensa kasauksessa. Aloin pohtia Myllykosken ja Mercedes-Benzin tehtaan yhtäläisyyksiä: Meneekö yritysten markkinoilla kilpailu kaiken edelle? Onko voimassa vain sääntö: tulos tai ulos?

Tehtaat ovat tärkeä osa nyt ja tulevaisuudessa, niin Suomessa kuin ympäri maailmaakin. Kun yksi ovi sulkeutuu, toinen avautuu. Toivon, että myös tavallinen työmies tai nainen on arvokas tehtaiden omistajille jatkossakin. Ilman hyviä työntekijöitä ei tulostakaan tule. Robotit voivat auttaa, mutta tuskin korvaavat ihmistä kokonaan. En vielä tiedä, viekö työurani minua tehtaalle, mutta olisi kiinnostavaa nähdä myös sitä puolta insinöörinä.
